Recommended Jazz Trombonists

Recommended Jazz Trombonists

Jazz is a quintessentially aural art form, and listening to recordings is among the most important things you can do to really understand the style(s). I frequently get requests from students for recommended jazz trombonists. Here is my non-comprehensive, admittedly-biased list:

J.J. Johnson

Bill Watrous (especially ballads)

Conrad Herwig

Ray Anderson

Andy Martin

Steve Turré

Wycliff Gordon

Carl Fontana

Frank Rosolino

Urbie Green

Curtis Fuller

Bob Brookmeyer (valve)

Kid Ory (Dixieland)

Al Grey (plunger)

Slide Hampton

Heya, Dr. Kimball, it’s one of your old students, Stephen Grady! I didn’t end up going into music as a career but I am a HUGE jazz fan and have some recommendations myself.

Dicky Wells is a much lesser known trombone player but his playing has an amazing vocal, almost conversational, quality about it. Wonderful.

A really important and influential (but also lesser known) jazz trombonist is Lawrence Brown. He has a smooth style that bears some similarities to something like Tommy Dorsey. However, his was definitely jazz music and he is almost entirely known for his work with the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

One of my personal favorite players is Jack Teagarden. His solos in terms of notes played are somewhat simplistic. However, like Dicky Wells he has an interestingly vocal sound. His sound is unorthodox, almost nasal and his playing has an exhilarating freedom and effortless sound to it. It would be hard to hold Teagarden up to comparison to other players because his sound, he stage presence and his style are very distinctive. I certainly suggest giving him a listen.
